Resources for writing

These are some of my favourite writing resources of all time.

Typography for Lawyers (link)

  • Formal, clean, and beautiful
  • May seem a bit old-fashioned, as many topics address documentation in print
  • Topics under "Page layout" were invaluable to me
    • Particularly relevant for Microsoft Word

Google Material Design / Style / Writing (link)

  • A good introduction to guiding principles when writing for end-users
  • Some of these hold true for software documentation.

The DITA Style Guide Best Practices for Authors (link)

  • Your essential primer on Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA), an industry-wide standard for software technical documentation
  • This is particularly present in larger multinational companies.
  • I learned these best practices in my very first job after uni (in Nokia). These best practices have stood the test of time, and I adhere to them to this day.

How to Say Nothing in 500 Words by Paul Roberts (link)

  • A hearty, time-tested narrative of what constitutes bad writing, and good
  • I read this in freshman year, and it left a very deep impression which reflected in my writing
